Post-Race Notes from the Race Director

Great job to all the racers!!!!! I hope you all had the adventure you were looking for. Thanks to the Bushwhack Crew for allowing
the Gleneagles Challenge to go to the next level. Your races rock, like no others, and I am glad I was able to be a part of it. Special thanks to all our amazing volunteers - Debbie (Medic), Chris (Photographer), Marcey (Coursework), Rob (Utility Man). We also truly appreciate all the racer support in retrieving the Control Points after the event. That type of help really makes the post race tear down much easier.

We would love to see your pics from the race and hear about your adventure through your race reports, particularly your route choices in this rogaine style event. When posted, please send them our way, so we can post a link for all to read.

  1. Palmetto Tarheels route, 8th overall, 600pts

    11, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 4, 10,9,8,7,6,5 By Bike:

23,24,25 By Boat-took out on Peninsula near hiking trails.

    12,13,14 on foot

Back to the boats--though we ran past them by 1/2 mile...our biggest blunder of the day!

Then paddled to 26, 27 across..to jump out for 15 then paddled to take out...portaged to pick up 16, 17...then dropped the boat and picked up our last CP number 1...clearing the course.

20 drove us a bit crazy after second guessing our attack point...14 we must have walked past a couple times without seeing it, driving us nearly insane.....then running past our green boat hidden in the woods topped off the ever present AR frustration meter!!!

  2. Interesting route selection...thanks for the info. I am sure there were 49 different routes selected.

  3. We struggled slightly w/ 20 too...I think we found it a little further east of where we plotted it. We had a very hard time with 18. Our counterclockwise route had us approaching from the north. We picked up the eastern road (block by logs) and headed south. The turn toward the intersection was more severe than what was shown on the map which really threw me off. I should have proceeded to the intersection and attacked from there (which we eventually did and found the CP immediately). It was a colossal mistake which ultimately cost us the race. I posted our full route under the other topic.

  4. Gung Ho - 600 pts - 4th overall 5hrs 4 min

23, 24, 25 by boat. Stop at pennisula and got 13, 14. Went to wrong inlet too, cost 5 min. boat to 26, 27, then across to 15 and portage back to TA getting 16 and 17 along the way.

Bike to 2, 4, 3 - cross the road with bikes and bikewhack to 22 and then on up to forest service road. 21, 20, 19, 18 then back to park getting 11 then all the points on the mountain bike course 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.

Then biked to hike section entrance and got 12, then rode over to get 1 and then mtn bike trail back to TA to finish.

Enjoyed the choices. All points right where they were marked. Great race.
